Happy New Year, from Smiles For Life!

Excitement here is growing: the 2019 Smiles For Life fundraising campaign is now just a few months away. We are confident we will equal or surpass last year’s total – thanks to the generosity of participating Crown Council dental practices across the United States and Canada, and to you.

Each year, beginning in March and running through June, hundreds of dental practices professionally whiten teeth in order to raise money. The funds go to seriously ill, disabled, and underprivileged kids all over the world.

Here’s how it works: participating dentists offer their patients professional teeth bleaching at greatly reduced prices. Payments are made not to the dentist, but directly to the Smiles For Life Foudation. Half of each payment goes to a local children’s charity chosen by the dentist, and the other half goes a children’s charity approved by Smiles For Life.

That’s all there is to it! It doesn’t get much simpler. Since it began in 1998, Smiles For Life has raised more than forty million dollars for children’s charities.

Smiles For Life has also sponsored teams of dentists visiting developing countries to provide dental care. “At the end of the day,” one of them observed, “it’s really not about how many teeth you fix … it’s about the people that you put your arm around, and let them know that we’re all God’s children.”

Participating dental practices throughout North America, all of them Crown Council members, donate their teeth whitening services. Supplies are donated by longtime Smiles for Life supporter Ultradent, the maker of Opalescence teeth whitening gels.

Something We Can Share

Since its inception, Smiles for Life has raised more than forty million dollars through its teeth whitening fundraiser. Every last penny of goes to the Smiles for Life Foundation, which aids children’s charities throughout the world. Have you ever wondered how it’s spent?

Some of it has supported field work in the Dominican Republic, where teams of volunteer dentists travel to work on the teeth of the people living there. Smiles for Life partnered with the humanitarian organization Esperanza on a trip in early 2018. But dental team volunteers say that simply focusing on the teeth they fix is missing the point.

“It’s not just a service,” one of them said. “It’s providing love, and a connection to the people.”

Nearly half of the people in the Dominican Republic lives on less than four dollars a day. Along with Esperanza, the goal of Smiles for Life volunteers is restoring hope and dignity.

“It’s about doing what you can with what you’ve got, and doing good,” a Smiles for Life volunteer said, during the 2018 visit. “So we’re extremely grateful to be here. And honestly, it’s been one of the best experiences of my life. And we’re excited to continue to contribute and to participate in these trips.”

“The most rewarding part about what we do here is the smiles on the faces of the people that look in the mirror when we finish their dental work,” said another. “It honestly is not about the teeth.”

The teeth whitening campaign takes place every year from March through June. Participating dental practices in the United States and Canada, all of them Crown Council members, donate their services to teeth whitening patients. Supplies for the campaign are donated by longtime Smiles for Life supporter Ultradent, the maker of Opalescence teeth whitening gels.

“It’s really not about how many teeth you fix in a day,” one of the Dominican Republic volunteers reflected. “It’s about the people that you put your arm around, and let them know that we’re all God’s children. And the reason why we’re here is because we have something that we can share.”

Smiles for Life: It’s Not About the Teeth

Every year, from March through June, Smiles for Life raises money through teeth whitening specials with participating Crown Council dentists across the United States and Canada. The funds support children’s charities the world over.

Smiles for Life, one of many reputable children's charities.Earlier in 2018, Smiles for Life partnered with Esperanza on a humanitarian expedition to the Dominican Republic, where nearly half of the population lives below the poverty line. Esperanza is a comprehensive approach to poverty alleviation. Together they provided as many Dominicans as possible with much-needed dental care, but their trip was about more than dentistry.

“Our goal in coming here is not to extract teeth, or to do fillings,” one of the dentists observed during the trip. “Our goal is to help make life better for the people who live here. Our motto is, ‘it’s not about the teeth, it’s about the people.'”

Smiles for Life has raised more than forty million dollars since its inception some twenty years ago. Participating children’s charities include St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, the Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation, and many others.

Teeth whitening supplies for the fundraising campaign are donated by Ultradent, the maker of Opalescence teeth whitening gels.

“Smiles for Life has been a great experience for me,” one of the volunteers said, during her stay in the Dominican Republic. “To work with them hands-on, and ensure that Esperanza is continuing their promise to provide our associates with services like dental and mental coverage.”

Brilliant White Smiles, for Life

Smiles for Life is the charitable arm of the Crown Council. It has raised more than $40 million since 1998, all of it earmarked for children’s charities around the world. But it would not be possible without Ultradent, the maker of Opalescence teeth whitening gels.

Smiles for Life runs a teeth whitening campaign and fund raiser each spring, and Ultradent donates all of the whitening supplies to participating dental practices throughout the United States and Canada. The dentists, in turn, donate all of their time to whiten teeth during the campaign, and the money raised goes straight to the charities.

Smiles for Life; whiten teeth to help a children's charity of your choiceInstead of paying the dentist, patients make out a check directly to Smiles for Life. What makes it so attractive is that they support worthy causes, and get a brilliant white smile at the same time.

Opalescence is a professional-strength teeth whitening gel that is available in both take-home and in-office forms. Both deliver exceptional results. The active ingredients bleach out surface stains on teeth, and also penetrate deep within to reach the dentin. Whitening toothpastes don’t even come close to matching the power of Opalescence.

It’s never too early to mark your calendar. The 2019 Smiles For Life campaign begins next March.

Want Whiter Teeth? You Have Options

By | Smiles For Life campaign, Tooth Whitening | No Comments

Teeth whitening is more popular than ever, as more and more people strive for a brilliant, dazzling smile. From whitening toothpastes to more elaborate systems, there are more ways to reach that goal than ever before.

What’s the best way to get whiter teeth?

Dental professionals agree that the reason teeth lose their luster is that they aren’t properly cared for over the years. That doesn’t mean the teeth aren’t healthy. It means that so many of the things we eat and drink can stain and discolor them. The goal of some teeth whitening procedures is to remove at least some of the stain and discoloration, so that the natural whiteness of the teeth is restored.

Whitening toothpastes are popular, but may not perform as advertised. “You can’t whiten your teeth with a toothpaste,” says Dr. Mark Burhenne. “Toothpaste can’t penetrate the tooth for what we call intrinsic whitening, which is a change in color of the tooth. The very best we can expect from a toothpaste is extrinsic whitening, which is removing stains that sit on the exterior surface of the teeth.” To get whiter teeth from brushing, Dr. Burhenne recommends an Oral B electric toothbrush with a whitening toothpaste for polishing.

Whitening strips are another popular method you can use at home. The active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, which lifts stains off of teeth. Whitening strips can lighten your teeth by about five shades.

At-home trays, available from some dentists, use a bleaching gel to whiten the teeth. Your dentist creates trays that are custom-fitted to your mouth. There are over-the-counter trays that work the same way, but the bleaching gels are not as strong as what you can get from a dentist, and some patients say they irritate their mouths.

You should never use any whitening system without talking to your dentist first. There could be an underlying issue, like decay or gum disease, that is making your teeth yellow.

Probably the best whitening, and certainly the safest, is that which is done by a dentist. There are methods that will dramatically whiten your teeth in as little as one hour. One is Opalescence Tooth Whitening Systems. With Opalescence, the tooth whitening formula is applied directly to whitening trays, which are worn nightly or daily, until the desired shade is reached. The teeth whitening formula slowly penetrates the tooth enamel to bleach out any stains.

What’s the bottom line? There are many teeth whitening options available. But the best advice may be to keep your mouth healthy. Brush and floss at least twice each day, and get regular check-ups that include a professional teeth cleaning.

From March through June, hundreds of dental practices throughout the United States and Canada professionally whiten teeth to raise money for seriously ill, disabled, and underprivileged children. They are members of the Crown Council, an alliance of leading-edge dental teams that are committed to promoting oral health and serving their communities through charitable work. 100% of the funds raised go to the Smiles for Life Foundation, the children’s charity arm of the Crown Council. Ultradent, the make of Opalescence® take-home trays, donates all of the teeth whitening supplies, and participating Crown Council dentists donate all of their time to whiten teeth during the Smiles For Life campaign.
